Biography
Pope Saint Gregory the Great (c. 540–604) was one of the most influential leaders in the history of the Church. Born into a wealthy Roman family, he gave up his position as a high-ranking official to become a monk. In 590, he was elected pope during a time of great turmoil.
Patronage: Teachers, singers, musicians, and popes.
Gregory worked tirelessly to strengthen the Church, care for the poor, and promote missionary efforts. He sent missionaries to England, reformed the liturgy, and emphasized the importance of pastoral care for priests and bishops. He also contributed to the development of Gregorian chant, which still enriches the Church’s liturgy today.
Canonized soon after his death, he is honored as a Doctor of the Church and a model of humble service.
Prayer

grant that, by his example and teaching,
we may serve You with humility and zeal.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
