Feast Day: August 20
Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153) was a French abbot and one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the 12th century. Born into a noble family, he entered the Cistercian monastery at Cîteaux and later founded the famous abbey of Clairvaux, which became a center of renewal for monastic life in Europe.
Renowned for his deep love of the Blessed Virgin Mary and his eloquent preaching, Bernard helped to guide popes, advise kings, and heal divisions within the Church. He was also a key figure in promoting the Second Crusade and in strengthening devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus.
Declared a Doctor of the Church, Saint Bernard’s writings remain a treasure of Catholic spirituality, filled with profound reflections on humility, love, and union with God.
Prayer
O God, who made of Saint Bernard a man consumed with zeal for Your house and a light shining in Your Church, grant, through his intercession, that we may be inflamed with the same spirit of love and always walk as children of light. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
