Feast Day: August 19
Patronage: Eudists, devotion to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts, and missionary work.
Saint John Eudes (1601–1680) was a French priest, missionary, and founder of two religious congregations: the Congregation of Jesus and Mary (the Eudists) and the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity. He is best remembered for promoting devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, teaching that through their hearts, the faithful can draw closer to God’s merciful love.
He tirelessly preached missions across France, cared for the sick during outbreaks of plague, and dedicated his life to the renewal of the clergy and formation of holy priests. His writings and teachings continue to inspire Catholics to live with deeper love and devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
