Patron Saint of Parish Priests
Feast Day: August 4
Saint John Vianney, also known as the Curé of Ars, was a humble French priest who became renowned for his deep holiness, tireless dedication to his parishioners, and powerful gift of hearing confessions. Born in 1786 near Lyon, France, John struggled academically in his path to priesthood, but his great love for God and perseverance led him to ordination.
Assigned to the small village of Ars, he transformed it through prayer, penance, and pastoral care. People from across France traveled to receive his spiritual counsel, and he often spent 16–18 hours a day in the confessional. His life was marked by simplicity, sacrifice, and profound faith in the Eucharist and the Virgin Mary.
In 1929, Pope Pius XI declared him the Patron Saint of Parish Priests, recognizing his model of priestly service.
