Saint of the Day: St. Lawrence of Brindisi

(July 21, 2025)

Priest, Doctor of the Church
Feast Day: July 21
Patron of: Brindisi, Italy; Capuchin missionaries

St. Lawrence of Brindisi (1559–1619) was a brilliant and humble Capuchin priest from Italy, known not only for his powerful preaching but for his deep love of Scripture and profound devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Gifted with an incredible memory and fluency in several languages—including Latin, Hebrew, and Greek—he used his knowledge to defend the Catholic faith during the time of the Protestant Reformation.

He served as a military chaplain, missionary, teacher, and even a diplomat, working to bring peace between nations and unity within the Church. Despite all these accomplishments, Lawrence remained deeply prayerful and committed to a life of poverty and service.

In 1959, Pope St. John XXIII declared him a Doctor of the Church, recognizing his theological wisdom and contribution to Catholic thought.

St. Lawrence of Brindisi reminds us that true strength lies not in power or pride but in surrender to God’s Word and will.

Prayer to St. Lawrence of Brindisi

O God,
You gave St. Lawrence the spirit of counsel and fortitude to preach Your Word and defend the faith.
Grant that through his intercession, we may always seek truth, live humbly, and serve You with wisdom and courage.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Lawrence of Brindisi, pray for us! 🙏
