About St. Bonaventure

St. Bonaventure (1221–1274) was born Giovanni di Fidanza in the Tuscan town of Bagnoregio, Italy. After a profound conversion at age eighteen, he joined the Franciscans, where his humility and genius shone alike. He studied theology at Paris under Alexander of Hales, earning fame as “the Seraphic Doctor” for his fiery love of God.

Called back to Italy, Bonaventure served as Minister General of the Franciscans, guiding them through challenges with wisdom and charity. In 1273, Pope Gregory X summoned him to the Second Council of Lyons, where he helped secure Church unity between East and West. Just months later, St. Bonaventure was named Cardinal Bishop of Albano. He died on his way back to Lyon, leaving behind spiritual classics like The Journey of the Mind to God and the Life of St. Francis, which continue to nourish seekers in the contemplative life.

Prayer

O God of all knowledge, through the intercession of St. Bonaventure, grant us the grace to seek You above all things, to ponder Your mysteries with childlike wonder, and to serve Your Church with both heart and intellect. Amen.
