CV NEWS FEED // President Donald Trump released a statement April 24 for Armenian Remembrance Day to commemorate Medz Yeghern, the 1915-1923 Armenian genocide that occurred in what is now modern-day Turkey.
“Today we commemorate the Meds Yeghern, and honor the memories of those wonderful souls who suffered in one of the worst disasters of the 20th Century,” the President wrote. “Beginning in 1915, one and a half million Armenians were exiled and marched to their deaths in the final years of the Ottoman Empire. On this Day of Remembrance, we again join the Great Armenian Community in America, and around the World, in mourning the many lives that were lost.”
President Trump noted that in 1915, the United States established the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief, which provided humanitarian aid to refugees from Armenia.
The Armenian Remembrance Day, he continued, witnesses the Armenian people’s strength and resilience.
“We are fortunate that so many Armenians have brought their rich culture to our shores,” he wrote, “and contributed so much to our Country, including decorated soldiers, celebrated entertainers, renowned architects, and successful business people.”
The President added that his administration remains committed to protecting vulnerable minorities and religious freedom.
In a March 11 statement, the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem warned that Armenian Christians in Syria are under serious threat and asked the international community to protect Christian Syrians, as CatholicVote previously reported.
