Canadian pro-lifers cautiously optimistic after announcement of Vancouver abortuary closing

CV NEWS FEED // Pro-lifers from Vancouver, Canada, are skeptical of a local abortion facility’s closure since the government is fully supportive of abortion on demand, with one longtime pro-lifer saying the closure’s circumstances don’t add up.

Elizabeth Bagshaw Clinic on March 28 announced the upcoming closure, citing changes to the province’s healthcare system, the operational barriers of new accreditation standards and lease constraints.

The closure was announced in the middle of the Archdiocese of Vancouver’s 40 Days for Life, which began on Ash Wednesday, the Catholic Register reports

Pro-life advocate John Hof, who was arrested for pro-life protests in Vancouver in 1989, was happy about the closure, although there is more to be done. He pointed out that there are still 35 hospitals that provide abortions in Vancouver.

He also expressed some skepticism over the Elizabeth Bagshaw Clinic’s closure.

“They have run out of money? Forgive me for being a little suspicious of this announcement,” he said. “We currently have a government that never stops advocating for abortion on demand and has bent over backwards to accommodate every program protecting the right to abortion. Something about this announcement doesn’t add up.”

Other pro-lifers expressed cautious optimism.

Father Larry Lynn, pro-life chaplain for the Archdiocese of Vancouver, welcomed what he called the potential closing and stated that faithful prayer and witnessing seemed to contribute to the closure announcement.

He also pointed to the change of culture in the United States as Planned Parenthood locations across the country are closing their doors.

“The tide is turning,” Fr. Lynn said. “Planned Parenthood is in a shambles mostly due to the prayer and witnessing of 40 Days for Life, the March for Life and many other initiatives.”
