Gallup: Trump’s approval climbs in second term with support from GOP base and some traditionally Democratic groups

CV NEWS FEED // As President Donald Trump’s job-approval rating continues to measure higher than it did in his first term, a new Gallup poll found that his popularity is driven by higher ratings from Hispanic, black and young adults, as well as support from massive amounts of Republicans, conservatives, and men.

In his second term, Trump has garnered 45% approval, higher than the 42% average he earned in the first few months of 2017. While traditionally Republican demographics have only seen increases in support for Trump, traditionally Democratic demographics also have experienced a rise in approval for the president, with young adults’ approval up six points, black adults’ up nine, and Hispanic adults’ up 15.

“In addition to Republicans and political conservatives, Trump earns relatively high approval ratings from men (54%) and non-Hispanic White adults (51%). Half of upper-income adults, Southern residents and married adults also approve of the job Trump is doing,” Gallup noted.

Gallup also investigated approval ratings of eight different policy issues as handled by the Trump administration. His approach to energy received the highest approval rating at 45%, followed by his relations with the news media (44%) and handling of the federal budget (43%). His handling of the environment, the economy, and foreign affairs, especially in regards to Ukraine and Russia, received lower approval ratings.

For each of the eight issues, approval ratings were polarized between political parties, with 83% to 90% of Republicans approving and 6% or less of Democrats also expressing support. Independents fell in the middle, ranging from 32% to 21% approval. Similarly, views of Trump’s overall performance as president were extremely polarized by political parties: 78% of Republicans strongly approve of him and 91% of Democrats strongly disapprove.

Gallup reported that the rise in overall support of Trump in his second term could be driven either by a higher rate of affiliation with Republicans, or dissatisfaction with the Democrats after former President Joe Biden’s term.

Gallup added, “Going forward, it’s likely that the Republican Party’s strength will depend on Trump maintaining strong support from traditionally Republican groups while expanding his appeal at least somewhat among Democratic-leaning groups.”
