California public libraries provide contraceptives, lubricants to minors without parental consent

CV NEWS FEED // Twelve public libraries in Sacramento have public displays provided by Planned Parenthood that distribute free condoms and contraceptives, CBS News recently reported. The displays are in the main hubs of some of the libraries, accessible to small children.

“It’s a little shocking,” parent Michael Reed said, according to CBS. “It’s not the place where I would think about sex education going on.”

He added later on, “It seems a little inappropriate to target children in that way.”

Another parent, Dream Gibson, said that while she appreciated that adults have access to free resources, the setting did not seem appropriate.

“I think exploring sexuality is healthy, but for a four-year-old, not necessarily the best thing,” Gibson said. “To have it be publicly displayed for any and every one to view, I don’t think it’s necessarily appropriate.”

According to a California Family Council (CFC) emailed press release, the displays “contain condoms, pregnancy tests, dental dams, lubricant, and graphic sex-ed materials, accessible to minors without restriction, supervision, or parental knowledge.”

CFC president Greg Burt called the displays a grotesque violation of parents’ rights.

“Parents take their children to the library expecting books — not a sexual health free-for-all,” he said. “Condoms and lubricant have no place in the hands of children, especially without their parents’ knowledge or consent.”
