CV NEWS FEED // The Diocese of Baton Rouge celebrated its annual Mass for safety and protection from hurricanes on June 1, the start of hurricane season.
Local news outlet BRProud reported that in addition to the Mass, the ceremony also included a prayer for safety and a blessing of a Catholic Charities delivery truck that responds to the needs of hurricane victims.
The Mass, hosted in partnership with Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge, was celebrated by local Bishop Michael Duca at St. Joseph Cathedral.
“We know how dangerous storms can be. And really, we have to depend on God’s power and strength not only to protect us, but also to give us the strength to endure whatever comes,” Bishop Duca said, according to BRProud.
The source also reported that the annual Mass acknowledges those who respond to hurricanes, helping victims pick up and rebuild their lives after a storm.
“To call attention to the caregivers and the first responders who are always on the spot immediately after a hurricane and any kind of disaster—I’ve always been amazed in Louisiana how quickly people wake up right after the storm has passed and immediately get to work,” Bishop Duca added.
The story also reported that Kim Burgo, vice president of disaster operation at the Diocese’s Catholic Charities, said the delivery truck and Catholic Charities are ready to handle any hurricanes that occur this season.
“We work very closely, particularly here at Catholic Charities in Baton Rouge, to make sure that staff have the capacity and the resources and everything that they need because they’re going to be on the front line,” Burgo said.
