CV NEWS FEED // On May 20, LOOPCast co-hosts Joshua Mercer, Tom Pogasic, and Erika Ahern contrasted Biden’s and Butker’s commencement speeches.
President Biden gave the 2024 commencement speech at Morehouse College, a historically black college (HBCU) in Georgia. Just one week previous, Harrison Butker, the Kansas City Chiefs kicker, gave a very different speech that went viral at the Benedictine College graduation.
“What was the thought process here?” Pogasic asked about Morehouse’s choice of speaker.
We’re going to have a white president come to a traditionally black college and tell everyone how they’re a victim, how America has treated them horribly, and that it’s hard to be a black man in America- coming from the leader of the country that is responsible for that?
“There was a lot of confused claps and it was not super well received,” Pogasic noted.
Biden’s speech focused on slavery, racism, and the war between Israel and Hamas over Palestine.
Mercer noted the tension between college-aged students and Biden over the Israel-Gaza war, as well as Biden’s record of voting against desegregation bills and making racist comments.
“The fact of the matter is that Joe Biden is an obnoxious, evil race baiter. He’s the guy who in 2012 was trying to discourage Black people from voting for Mitt Romney,” Mercer said. “He said to Black voters, ‘he’ll put you back in chains.’ Chains. As in slavery.”
“It’s so nuclear,” Mercer added. “What would be the purpose for Biden to speak at a historically Black college in a swing state like Georgia? He’s going to try to use the same race-baiting stuff.”
“He’s always been this way.” Pogasic agreed.
“You know what really would have caused controversy? If he would have said that women are probably going to become mothers and homemakers.”
“That’s just too far!” Mercer joked. “You’re fine with all the race-baiting, you’re fine with all the racial stuff, but as soon as you bring up mothers, watch out.”
