CV NEWS FEED // Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) International has issued a statement pointing out that the resolution passed by the European Parliament is nonbinding, and that “international law continues to protect the life of both mother and baby.”
As CatholicVote previously reported, a majority vote among European Parliamentary members on April 11 endorsed enshrining the “right to abortion” in the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights. However, as ADF notes in its statement released on the same day of the ruling, the resolution “has no impact on international law, which protects the right to life.”
In total, 336 parliamentary members out of 705 voted in support of the resolution, while 163 voted against, and 39 abstained.
Senior European Counsel for ADF International in Brussels Adina Portaru asserted in the statement that “international law remains clear and consistent—everybody has the right to life, no matter their age, sex, ability, background, or stage of development.”
She continued:
Every government should protect the most vulnerable in their countries – including babies in the womb. Women deserve far better than abortion. A Europe that is truly committed to human rights is one that respects and protects both lives in a pregnancy – supporting both mother and child
While the resolution goes to the extent of deriding medical professionals who object to performing abortions, Portaru concluded, “The European Union is not called to change abortion policies internationally, nor inside member states, and in reality, a non-binding resolution like this has no power to amend the EU Charter on Fundamental Rights.”
