Nebraska pro-life advocates propose ‘better’ ballot initiative

CV NEWSFEED // Pro-life advocates and medical professionals in Nebraska are seeking to propose a “better choice” to voters in November regarding abortion-related ballot measures.

Backed by Nebraska Right to Life and Nebraska Family Alliance, a new ballot initiative called “Protect Women and Children” aims to create constitutional protection for preborn children in the second and third trimesters.

As one local report pointed out, “Organizers of any ballot initiative must gather signatures from at least 10% of Nebraska voters. The signatures must include 5% of registered voters in at least 38 of the state’s 93 counties.”

The deadline for ballot initiatives to obtain the requisite signatures is July 3.

Four individuals are listed on the committee for the initiative, including three registered nurses and a pharmacist.

An alternative to the initiative proposed by the pro-abortion group Protect Our Rights which would make abortion a fundamental right until fetal viability, the new pro-life initiative would place a ban on abortions after the first trimester, excepting cases of rape, incest, and medical emergencies.

“This initiative establishes a floor of protection, not a ceiling, meaning preborn children must, at a minimum, be protected by the second trimester, and stronger pro-life laws could still be passed going forward,” state Nebraska Family Alliance in a recent news release

“If passed, Nebraska would be the first state in the nation to provide constitutional protection to preborn children in a state constitution,” the release added.
