Saint of the Day: Saint Scholastica

Saint Scholastica

Saint Scholastica (c. 480–543) was the twin sister of Saint Benedict of Nursia, the father of Western monasticism. From her youth, she consecrated her life to God and became the founder of Benedictine religious life for women.

Each year, Scholastica and Benedict met to pray and share spiritual conversation. During their final meeting, Scholastica prayed that they might remain together longer. God answered her prayer with a sudden storm, preventing Benedict from leaving. Benedict later acknowledged that her prayer prevailed because “she loved more.”

Saint Scholastica is remembered for her deep prayer, humility, and love rooted in complete trust in God.

She is the patron saint of Benedictine nuns and those seeking peace through prayer.

Did You Know?

According to Saint Gregory the Great, the miracle of the storm shows that God listens especially to prayers made with pure love, teaching that charity is the heart of true holiness.

Prayer

Saint Scholastica,
woman of prayer and love,
teach us to seek God above all things.
Help us to grow in humility, faith,
and trust in the power of prayer.
May our lives reflect the love of Christ in all we do.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
