Our Lady of Hope: Powerful Prayer for Hope in Difficult Times (Feast Day January 17)

Today, January 17, 2026, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Hope (also known as Our Lady of Pontmain), commemorating the miraculous apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary on January 17, 1871, in the small French village of Pontmain during the Franco-Prussian War.This beautiful Marian feast reminds us of Mary’s role as a beacon of hope in times of crisis, war, fear, and uncertainty—perfect for our ongoing Jubilee Year reflections and the need for hope in today’s world.

The Story of the Apparition

In mid-January 1871, Prussian forces had invaded much of France, and the tiny village of Pontmain (population ~500) lay in their path. Fear gripped the people as defeat followed defeat for France. On the evening of January 17, while two young brothers, Eugène (12) and Joseph (10) Barbedette, were helping their father in the barn, Eugène stepped outside and saw a beautiful Lady in the sky above a nearby house. She was dressed in a dark blue robe sprinkled with golden stars, wearing a black veil and a golden crown, with a red crucifix appearing later.

The boys called others, and soon two more children (Françoise Richer and Jeanne-Marie Lebosse) saw her too. Adults couldn’t see her, but the children described the vision unfolding: a banner appeared with the message, “But pray, my children. God will hear you in time. My Son allows Himself to be touched.” As the villagers gathered and prayed the Rosary, sang hymns (including “Mother of Hope”), and offered reparation, the vision progressed—the Lady smiled, stars multiplied on her robe, and she held a red crucifix. The crowd knelt in tears and prayer.

Miraculously, at the very hour of the apparition, the Prussian commander reportedly saw an “invisible Madonna” barring the way forward. The troops halted, withdrew, and an armistice was signed just days later on January 28, ending the war. All soldiers from Pontmain returned home safely. The Bishop of Laval approved the apparition in 1872, and a basilica was built on the site, which still draws pilgrims today.

This apparition teaches that true hope comes through persevering prayer, trust in God’s timing, and union with Christ’s Cross—Mary didn’t remove the threat instantly but invited the people to pray, and God acted.

Why This Feast Matters Today

In our time of global uncertainties, personal trials, and spiritual battles, Our Lady of Hope invites us to pray without ceasing, embrace our crosses, and trust that God hears us. Her message echoes the virtue of hope (Catechism 1817-1821): desiring eternal life and expecting God’s help. She reminds us: God allows Himself to be touched by humble, persistent prayer.

A Short Prayer for the Feast DayO Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Hope,
who appeared in Pontmain to bring comfort and peace amid war and fear,
intercede for us today.
Help us to pray with childlike trust, knowing that God hears in His perfect time.
May your Son’s Cross be our strength, and your smile our encouragement.
Mother of Hope, pray for us, that we may live as pilgrims of hope in this Jubilee Year.
Amen.

Our Lady of Hope (Our Lady of Pontmain), pray for us!
