One Minute Catechism: What are we commanded by the Eighth Commandment?

What are we commanded by the Eighth Commandment?
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

The Eighth Commandment commands us to:

  1. Tell the truth always, especially when someone’s good name is at stake.
  2. Respect the reputation of others, guarding them from unjust harm.
  3. Be honest in our words, actions, and promises.
  4. Avoid lies, gossip, slander, detraction, calumny, and rash judgment.
  5. Make reparation when we damage someone’s good name or mislead others.
  6. Speak with charity, using our words to build others up, not tear them down.
  7. Defend the innocent and uphold justice, especially when the truth is needed.
  8. Avoid hypocrisy and deceit, living with integrity before God and neighbor.

In short:
The Eighth Commandment calls us to love the truth, speak the truth, and protect the dignity of every person’s reputation.
