Saint of the Day: Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and the Vietnamese Martyrs

Patronage: Vietnamese Catholics
Feast: November 24

Today the Church honors Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs, a courageous group of priests, religious, and laypeople who gave their lives for Christ during the brutal persecutions in Vietnam between the 18th and 19th centuries.

Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc was a diocesan priest known for his deep humility, gentle spirit, and tireless pastoral care. He changed his name to avoid arrest and continued to minister secretly, offering the sacraments and strengthening the faith of his people. In 1839, he was captured, tortured, and ultimately beheaded for refusing to deny Christ.

The group of martyrs honored today represents countless Vietnamese Christians—men and women, young and old—whose steadfast faith became a powerful testimony to the Gospel. Their sacrifice reminds us that the Church is built on the witness of ordinary believers who choose Christ above all else.

Prayer

Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and all the Vietnamese Martyrs,
pray for us that we may remain faithful to Christ
with courage, humility, and unwavering love. Amen.
