Analyst explains difference between ‘pro-choice’ and ‘pro-abortion’ in New Jersey

In a new opinion column, radio host and former New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Bill Spadea argues that New Jersey’s abortion debate is being flattened into a simple “for or against” binary and that political messaging has obscured what he sees as meaningful distinctions within the issue.

In his Nov. 17 article, “Strengthening support systems for pregnant women in New Jersey,” Spadea lays out what he describes as three separate positions: those identifying as pro-life, those who prefer the government stay out of the issue and whom he labels “pro-choice,” and what he characterizes as a third group he calls “pro-abortion.”

He argued that the third position is under-examined in public discourse and claims it has more political influence in the state than voters realize.

Much of the column centers on election-year messaging. Spadea sharply criticized Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer, accusing him of opposing pregnancy resource centers, which offer free medical care and support for women who want to continue their pregnancies. He also revisited a clash from the 2025 Republican primary, alleging that comments he made about expanding support for pregnant women were misrepresented by rival Jack Ciattarelli.

“During the 2025 primary for Governor, pro-Abortion Jack Ciattarelli actually took the words I used in an interview talking about providing women in New Jersey with a true ‘choice’ to have their babies wildly out-of-context in order to lie and portray that I was a backer of abortion,” Spadea wrote.

Beyond campaign rhetoric, Spadea positioned his argument as a call for greater investment in support services for pregnant women. Citing ultrasound statistics, he contends that offering more comprehensive resources would lead more women to carry pregnancies to term.

“Women deserve the choice of bringing a new life into the world, as 85–90% choose life after seeing the baby on an ultrasound,” he wrote.

He highlighted organizations such as Options For Her and New Jersey Right to Life as examples of groups he believes incoming Gov. Mikie Sherrill should elevate when shaping statewide policy, adding that there’s “plenty of room at the table for strong, pro-women groups like this.”
