Saint of the Day: Saint John Chrysostom

Feast Day: September 13

Saint John Chrysostom (c. 347–407) was one of the greatest preachers in the history of the Church and is honored as a Doctor of the Church. Born in Antioch, he became a gifted priest and preacher, earning the name Chrysostom, which means “Golden-Mouthed,” because of his eloquence and ability to move hearts with the Word of God.

As Patriarch of Constantinople, he fearlessly spoke out against corruption, injustice, and moral decay, even when it brought him into conflict with powerful rulers. His homilies on Scripture remain among the most influential in Christian history, and he is remembered for his reform of the liturgy, particularly the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, which is still celebrated in the Eastern Churches today.

Despite persecution and exile, Saint John remained steadfast in his love for Christ, often repeating the words: “Glory be to God for all things!” He died in 407, leaving behind a legacy of courage, faith, and devotion to truth.

Prayer

O God, You gave Saint John Chrysostom a golden mouth to preach Your Word with truth and courage. Grant that we too may live and speak the Gospel with boldness and charity. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
