Saint of the Day: Saint Paphnutius the Confessor

Feast Day: September 11

Saint Paphnutius, known as “the Confessor,” was a 4th-century bishop from Egypt who endured persecution under the Roman Emperor Maximinus. As a young monk and disciple of Saint Anthony of the Desert, he lived a life of prayer, fasting, and deep holiness.

During the persecution, Paphnutius was tortured for his Christian faith—he even lost an eye and was condemned to forced labor in the mines. Yet he never denied Christ. After the persecutions ended, he became a bishop and a respected defender of orthodoxy at the First Council of Nicaea (325 A.D.), where he spoke boldly in defense of the faith.

Saint Paphnutius is remembered as a humble shepherd who carried his wounds for Christ with joy, and as a courageous witness who guided the Church during difficult times. His life teaches us to remain faithful no matter the trials we face.

Prayer

Saint Paphnutius, faithful confessor of the faith, pray for us. May your courage inspire us to stand firm in Christ, even when we face suffering or opposition. Help us to trust that God’s grace is stronger than all trials. Amen.
