Saint of the Day: St. Giles, Abbot

St. Giles is venerated as the patron saint of the poor, the disabled, and those seeking a deeper life of prayer.

Biography
St. Giles (c. 650–710) was a Greek Christian who became one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages. Desiring a life of prayer and solitude, he left his home and lived as a hermit in the forests near Nîmes, France. He was known for his holiness, humility, and compassion, living off the land and devoting himself to God in silence.

Legend tells that a wounded deer, pursued by hunters, sought refuge with him, and an arrow meant for the animal struck Giles instead. He forgave the hunters, and soon disciples gathered around him. A monastery was built in his honor, which became a place of healing and pilgrimage.

Prayer

Lord God,
through the intercession of St. Giles,
grant us the courage to live with humility and faith,
and to care for the poor and those in need.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
