Saint of the Day: Saint Raymond Nonnatus

Patronage: Expectant mothers, newborns, midwives, and those falsely accused.

Short Biography:
Saint Raymond Nonnatus (1204–1240) was born in Catalonia, Spain. His surname “Nonnatus,” meaning not born, refers to his birth by Caesarean section after his mother died in childbirth. From a young age, he showed a deep devotion to God and later joined the Mercedarians, an order dedicated to ransoming Christians enslaved by the Moors.

Raymond personally went into captivity, offering himself as a hostage when funds ran out to free others. While imprisoned, he continued preaching the faith, which led his captors to pierce his lips with a padlock to silence him. He endured this suffering with courage until he was ransomed and returned to Spain. Though his life was short, his heroic charity and sacrifice made him a model of love for the oppressed.

Prayer

O God, who made Saint Raymond Nonnatus a true example of charity and mercy,
grant that we may follow his example of love,
defend the truth with courage,
and bring relief to those who suffer.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
