About Saint Martha of Bethany

Saint Martha appears in the Gospels as one of Jesus’ close friends and a faithful disciple. She lived in Bethany, near Jerusalem, with her siblings Mary and Lazarus, and welcomed Jesus into their home (Luke 10:38–42). Martha is known for her active service, preparing meals and caring for Jesus with love, while her sister Mary listened at His feet.

Though Jesus gently reminded her that “Mary has chosen the better part,” He loved Martha deeply. In John 11, Martha expresses great faith after the death of her brother Lazarus, proclaiming:

Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God.” (John 11:27)

Tradition holds that after Pentecost, Martha continued to serve and evangelize. Her witness reminds us that service done with love is holy and that faith in Christ brings life.

Prayer to Saint Martha

Saint Martha,
you served the Lord with love and trusted in Him with a faithful heart.
Teach us to welcome Jesus into our homes and lives with joy,
and to serve others with kindness and care.
Help us to believe in Christ’s power even in difficult times.

Saint Martha, pray for us!
Amen.
