About St. Joachim and Anne
On July 26, the Church honors Saints Joachim and Anne, the mother and father of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the grandparents of Jesus. While the Bible does not mention them by name, early Christian tradition — particularly from ancient writings like the Protoevangelium of James — tells us about their deep faith and devotion.
According to tradition, Joachim and Anne were an elderly, childless couple who prayed fervently for a child. In response to their prayers, God blessed them with Mary, who would become the Mother of God. They raised her in love, teaching her to be faithful, prayerful, and open to God’s will.
Their role in salvation history reminds us of the sacred vocation of parenthood, and their example is a source of hope and encouragement for all families.
Prayer to Saints Joachim and Anne
O Saints Joachim and Anne,
faithful parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus,
help all families to grow in love and holiness.
Intercede for grandparents and parents everywhere,
that they may guide their children with wisdom and faith.
Through your prayers, may we be a family united in Christ.
