Patron of: Nurses, the Sick, Hospitals, and Those Suffering from Gambling

About St. Camillus de Lellis

St. Camillus was born in the Abruzzo region of Italy to a soldier’s family. After a period of military service and struggles with gambling, he experienced a profound conversion in 1575. Abandoning his former life, he entered a hospital for incurables in Rome, where he found his calling caring for the sick. In 1584, he was ordained a priest and later founded the Order of the Ministers of the Sick (Camillians), with a special fourth vow: to serve the sick even at risk to their own lives.

St. Camillus ministered tirelessly in hospitals plagued by disease, personalizing care for each patient. His compassionate service, even to plague victims, earned him the title “Father of International and Military Hospitals”. He was canonized in 1746 and is honored as a protector of nurses and caregivers .

Brief Reflection

St. Camillus invites us to see Christ in the suffering, to serve with both skill and tender compassion. His life reminds us that true sanctity often shines brightest in humble service to others.
