Feast Day: July 4
Patron of: Peacemakers, widows, charitable works
Biography:
Born in 1271 in Zaragoza, Spain, Elizabeth married King Dinis I of Portugal and became Queen at age 12. Known for her deep piety, she used her royal influence to feed the poor, care for the sick, and ransom Christian captives. When dispute arose between her husband and their son, Elizabeth bravely intervened to make peace—walking barefoot and fasting until reconciliation was achieved. After her husband’s death, she retired to a convent she had founded in Coimbra, where she continued her work of mercy until her death in 1336. Her life exemplifies charity, humility, and peacemaking.
