CV NEWS FEED // Several months into the Trump administration’s second term, polling indicates that Democrats would like their party to become more progressive.
An April SurveyUSA poll discovered that of 885 Democrats, 50% wanted the party to be more progressive, while 24% said they wanted it to stay the same and 18% said they hoped it would become more moderate.
The April findings conflict with a January Gallup poll that found 45% of Democrats wanting their party to become more moderate, with only 29% indicating that it should be more liberal and 22% wanting it to stay the same. CatholicVote previously reported that Democrat Party insiders met in February to discuss the state of the party, recommending that Democrat politicians sideline progressive ideologies in favor of policies that appeal to the working class.

Conversely, the April poll found Republicans to be more satisfied with their party, with 40% wanting it to be more conservative and 44% happy with the state of it at the moment. The January Gallup poll found similar results.
RealClearPolling reported that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., have spearheaded initiatives for progressive change in the Democrat Party in recent months. Both politicians have traveled to traditionally Democrat and Republican areas of the country to hold rallies slamming the Trump administration, especially Elon Musk’s role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). An April Harvard-Harris poll found that the majority of Democrats (62%) oppose efforts to slash government spending.
The same poll also asked respondents whether they favor Democrat politicians “who are calling on Democrats to adopt a more aggressive stance toward Trump and his administration and ‘fight harder’” or if they prefer “moderate Democrats who are willing to compromise on Trump issues important to their base.” The majority (72%) said they preferred more progressive politicians.
“The preference can be seen in the difference in the favorability of the figures as well,” RealClearPolling reported. “In recent Economist/YouGov polling, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer — a legacy Democratic figure — pulled only 42% favorability among Democrats, while those like Ocasio-Cortez in the progressive camp garnered 66% favorability.”
Democrat and independent respondents approved even more overwhelmingly of Sanders, with 80% of Democrats and 42% of independents supporting him and just 11% of Democrats and 32% of independents disapproving of him.
