Mount St. Mary’s University to hold religious freedom summit

CV NEWS FEED // A historic Catholic university based in the small Maryland town of Emmitsburg will hold a summit March 31 on religious liberty, welcoming three prominent speakers who will provide insight regarding how  the institution can uphold the ideal of religious freedom in today’s world. Father John Dubois, who was a pivotal contributor to the founding of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in 1808, fled the religious persecution that was rampant in the French Revolution, according to the seminary’s website. He welcomed Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton to Mount St. Mary’s in 1809.

“Today, challenges to religious liberty exist across the globe,” an email from the university states. “How should the Mount he founded serve religious liberty so valued by the Church and needed by society and believers?”

Summit attendees will hear from David Trimble, president of the Religious Freedom Institute (RFI); Ismail Royer, RFI’s director of Islam and Religious Freedom; and Stanley Carlson-Thies, senior director of the Institutional Religious Freedom Alliance.

The RFI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the idea that religious freedom is a fundamental human right and key to international security.

According to the release, Trimble will analyze the current status of religious freedom in America, Carlson-Thies will address the connection between institutional and individual religious liberty, and Royer will explain how religious liberty  is a universal concern.

The summit will commence at 6 p.m. at the university’s Marion Burk Knott Auditorium and will conclude at 7:20 p.m.
